How Many Wedding Cars Do You Need?
Booking the wedding car sounds simple until you start counting people. There is the bride and whoever walks her down the aisle, the bridesmaids, the groom’s party, parents, perhaps flower girls and page boys, and a dress that takes up more room than you would expect.
The right number of wedding cars depends on your party size, your route and how much you want everyone to travel in style. Here is a straightforward way to work it out.
The Short Answer
Most couples book one to three wedding cars:
- One car for a small wedding where only the couple, or the bride and one other person, travel in the hire vehicle
- Two cars for a typical wedding with a bridal party, one for the bride and her father, and one for the bridesmaids or the groom’s party
- Three or more cars for larger wedding parties, or when parents and key family members also want to arrive in matching vehicles
If you are unsure, start by listing who needs to travel, and when.
Step 1: Count Who Needs to Travel
Write down everyone you want in a hire car at each stage of the day. A typical list might include:
- The bride
- The person giving her away, often her father
- Her mother
- Bridesmaids and maid of honour
- Flower girls and page boys
- The groom, best man and groomsmen
- Both sets of parents
Then ask yourself who really needs a chauffeur-driven car. Guests will usually arrive under their own steam, and some members of the wedding party may be happy to share a lift. You are only booking cars for the people whose arrival you want to feel special.
Step 2: Allow for the Dress
This is the point most people overlook. A standard luxury saloon seats up to three passengers in the back, but a large skirt, a long train or a veil takes up far more space than a standard suit or dress. In practice, a bride in a full gown will often travel with just one other person, and bridesmaids may need a separate car, or a larger vehicle, to be comfortable.
Think about:
- How full the bride’s dress is
- Whether the bridesmaids’ dresses are also large
- Whether flower girls need room to sit comfortably
- How much space you want for bouquets and photographs

Step 3: Think About the Journey
Count the legs of the journey, not just the people. A wedding day often includes several trips:
- Home or hotel to the ceremony
- Ceremony to the photo location
- Photo location to the reception
- Reception to the evening departure
If the bride and her father travel first, the bridesmaids and the bride’s mother usually go ahead of them, so they are in place when she arrives. This can be done with a single car making two trips, but only if the venue is close and the timings are generous. If the ceremony is on a tight schedule, a second car avoids the risk of anyone arriving late.
Ask your chauffeur company how long each turnaround takes, and check whether a single-car plan is realistic before you commit to it.
Typical Wedding Car Plans
Small wedding (up to about 30 guests)
Cars needed: 1
One car carries the bride and her father, then takes the couple from the ceremony to the reception. The groom and his party often travel separately or share a ride. This keeps costs down while still giving you the arrival photograph you want.
Medium wedding (30 to 100 guests)
Cars needed: 2
A common arrangement is one car for the bride and her father, and a second for the bridesmaids and the bride’s mother. After the ceremony, the couple leave together in the first car, and the second car may carry the immediate family. This works well for most weddings.
Large wedding (100+ guests, or a big bridal party)
Cars needed: 3 or more
You might add a car for the groom and best man, one for the parents, or a larger vehicle for the bridal party. A stretch limousine or people carrier can carry a large group in one go, which keeps the arrival coordinated and means you are not paying for several separate cars.
Very large party
If you want to move guests between venues, a wedding bus is usually more practical and affordable than adding more cars.
Matching Cars or a Mix?
You do not have to hire identical vehicles. Some couples choose a classic car for the bride and a modern saloon for the bridal party. Others prefer a matching fleet for a more formal look. Both can work well, and a mix can be a sensible way to control the budget.

How Many Cars Affect the Price
Each extra vehicle adds to the total, although many companies offer a reduction when you book several cars together. The final cost also depends on the hire duration, the distance and the day, which we cover in our guide to what affects the cost of wedding car hire.
A practical way to manage cost is to spend most on the car for the bride and groom, since that arrival is the most photographed, and choose something simpler for the bridal party.
Book Early, Especially for Multiple Cars
Booking two or three vehicles from the same fleet means finding several free cars on your date, and often in matching colours. That is harder to arrange close to the wedding. Our advice on how far in advance to book your wedding car applies even more when you need more than one.
A Quick Checklist Before You Decide
- Have you listed everyone who needs a hire car, and at which stage?
- Have you allowed for the size of the bride’s dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses?
- Do you need the cars for more than one leg of the day?
- Would one larger vehicle replace two smaller ones?
- Have you asked the company about multi-car pricing?
- Is everything confirmed in your quote, including timings and pick-up points?
Planning Your Wedding Cars
The right number comes down to who is travelling, what they are wearing and how many journeys you want covered. Make a simple list, check the dress and the timings, then speak to your chauffeur company about what fits.
